Take a Snookie Hike Through Alys Beach Nature Preserve

Alys Beach is truly one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Florida but did you know about the nature preserve situated on the northern portion of the community? What a perfect time of year to get outdoors and explore one of South Walton’s hidden gems.

Mark your calendar and plan to join eco-tour guide Snookie Parrish for a nature hike through a wetland preserve and trail at Alys Beach! Tour dates are set for March 12, March 19, March 26, and April 2 from 1-2pm. Wear comfortable shoes and meet at Fonville Press to begin your adventure.

The preserve encompasses 22 acres of naturally occurring wetlands and habitats that support many unusual plants and trees. The trail itself is approximately 3/4 miles of open trails and boardwalks that were established to carry the hiker and biker across some sensitive areas that would be impossible to get to without disturbing mother nature.

The boardwalks were built with low impact on the environment and transverse areas that most folks would never get to see this close and personal. Pitcher plants, coreopsis, black and white titi, myrtle hollies and pond cypress are some of the many wetland plants that can be experienced up close and personal. This particular wetland is part of the watershed for Lake Powell, one of our largest dune lakes.

Last year SoWal.com Videographer Collis Thompson took a tour through the preserve with Snookie. See video for a glimpse into the preserve and its natural treasures.
